Beauty Editors review 5 incredible black-owned beauty brands

Ami Colé is one of those brands that has been on my radar for years, but I’m kind of just try. I’m really mad at myself for waiting so long to try some stuff because this brand is the for black and brown skin tones. It’s so refreshing to find a makeup brand that caters specifically to darker skin tones and let me tell you, the formulas do not disappoint. I tried the Skin-Enhancing Tint and Concealer and all I have to say is Wow. The formulas are so creamy and make your skin look so dewy and fresh without looking unnatural or cakey. I played around with using the concealer as a base and that worked incredibly well. It’s also rare to find a concealer or skin tone that matches my skin tone so well, and both of these items did so flawlessly. The brand’s makeup is definitely for those who, like me, prefer a minimal look every day—these products are the perfect products for that. I am so incredibly excited about this brand and can’t wait to see what else comes out.

I think this is my new favorite makeup brand. I can’t stop wearing the mascara and lip oil – they are just incredible products. The mascara makes my lashes look absolutely insane. Creates length, lift and volume. Plus, it doesn’t smudge under my eyes (major win!) and it’s easy to take off at the end of the day. The lip oil is moisturizing and gives my lips a great shine without being sticky. I also feel like it has an almost blurring effect – it instantly smooths the lines on my lips.” — Katie Berohn, beauty editor

“Every beauty and fashion editor I talk to, I mean it it gushes, about Ami Colé’s line of sheer, must-have makeup, and after trying two fan-favorites—the Lip Care Oil and the Light-Catching Highlighter—I can attest that said breath is 110% guaranteed. Both elements are supreme. When I want a glassy, yet totally natural dewy effect on my skin, I swipe on the highlighter (which is translucent but contains those shimmery light-reflecting minerals you can’t tear your eyes away from—so pretty! ) and My skin goes from a five to a 10. The Lip Treatment Oil is also a star in its own right. I tried the shade Smitten, a sheer hot pink that washed my lips in the juiciest watermelon Jolly Rancher stain I’ve ever seen. It feels more like a gloss to me since it’s a bit thicker and stickier than a true oil, but I don’t even care thanks to how shiny and mirror-like it makes my lips look. I seriously love it.” – Erin Jahns, beauty director

“If the brow pencil and lip oil are any indication of the rest of the brand’s products, I’m going to be obsessed with them all. The brow pencil is super thin so I can create brush strokes. The lip oil is thick and moisturizing so it stays put and doesn’t disappear after a sip of coffee like many others. This brand was my favorite of all the ones I tried.” — Kaitlyn McLintock, associate beauty editor
