Brisbane Roar coach Warren Moon sacked … here’s why it went so wrong for the A-League side

Warren Moon has been sacked as Brisbane Roar manager after his struggling side plummeted to 11th in the A-League men’s division after last weekend’s matchday 17 games.

Moon, 40, has started the season in promising fashion, losing just once in 10 matches, but the men in orange are now without a win in their last seven outings.

They have also won just three games this campaign.

The poor run of results prompted Roar general manager Ante Kovacevic to pull the trigger on Monday, deciding to relieve Moon of his duties immediately.

Moon led the Roar to the finals in 2021 and 2022 and leaves with 22 wins, 22 draws and 31 losses from 75 games in charge.

Daily Mail Australia revealed where it all went wrong for Moon, who took over from Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler towards the end of the 2019/20 season.

Corey Brown standing

Amid rumors of recreational drug use – which Brown has vehemently denied – the Roar released a statement in August advising the defender’s contract be terminated immediately.

And it was raw to say the least, just 25 words total.

Then the A-League players’ union stepped in, led by Professional Footballers Australia co-chief executive Beau Busch.

The matter remains unresolved and is being taken to the courts.

Brown pulled on a Roar shirt on 141 occasions in two spells at the club, and the playing staff were said to be less than impressed with the messy handling of the situation.

Marquee is leaving after just six months

Former English Premier League striker Charlie Austin has been tasked with solving Brisbane’s lack of bite in the final third as their signing has been in the off-season.

The 33-year-old, who scored four goals in 11 games in all competitions, left the club suddenly in December, citing family reasons.

He now plays for Swindon Town in England’s League Two.

Brisbane had no plan B to replace Austin and several lackluster performances in 2023 followed.

13 goals from 17 games also tells the story of this campaign.

Signing players in the twilight of their careers

Offering 34-year-old Robbie Kruse a new contract was not a popular move with many Brisbane fans.

Age has taken its toll and Kruse is not expected to rekindle his team’s finals hopes as he is only likely to emerge as an impact player.

Journeyman forward Stefan Skepovic may have an impressive pedigree, representing the likes of Sampdoria, Club Brugge, Sporting Gijon and Celtic – but at 33, his best days are also behind him.

In addition, expensive off-field drama has plagued the club in recent years.

In 2021, former Socceroos midfielder Brett Holman had to chase the club to pay him $400,000 in withheld insurance money after suffering a career-ending injury while playing for the Roar against Perth Glory in 2018.

And Fowler won a six-figure unfair dismissal payout after taking the matter to FIFA when he and former assistant Tony Grant were sacked in mid-2020.
