What a way to call it a day! Chad Henne announces immediate retirement after Super Bowl LVII win with Kansas City … after former Dolphins and Jaguars player becomes legendary backup with Chiefs
Two-time Super Bowl champion backup quarterback Chad Henne announced his retirement just hours after the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII.
Henne decided to end his career on a high note after twelve NFL seasons with the Miami Dolphins and Jacksonville Jaguars.
The former Michigan Wolverines quarterback announced his decision via Instagram in one of the more subtle and blunt ways for an athlete to reveal that he is no longer playing.
“Calling it a career. Closing with @budlight and another ring! #superbowlchamps #chiefs,” was Henne’s entire post.
The Chiefs thanked him in a comment on that post, saying: “Congratulations on an incredible career. Thank you for everything you have done for us.’

He confirmed his retirement via Instagram with a simple photo and an even simpler caption
After an accomplished career at Michigan that saw him set school records for passing yards, attempts, yards, touchdowns and interceptions, Henne was selected with the 57th overall pick in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft.
Henne played his first season as Miami’s backup to Chad Pennington. He started 13 games the following season after Pennington was suspended in Week 3.
He remained a starter for the 2010 season, but lost his starting job at some point and ended up injured that year. Still, Henne’s 14 starts are the most of his career.
After suffering a season-ending injury in the 2011 season, the Dolphins opted to release him – as Henne signed with Jacksonville in free agency.
Henne finished the 2012 season as the starter after a season-ending injury to QB1 Blaine Gabbert.
Gubert returned as the starter for the first few games of 2013, but was ultimately benched for Henne – who led the team to just a 4-12 record.
Henne was drafted in the second round as the 57th overall pick in 2008 by the Dolphins
He then went on to sign with the Jaguars, battling Blaine Gabbert & Blake Bortles for the starting spot
That offseason, the Jaguars drafted UCF quarterback Blake Bortles – who assumed the starting duties starting in Week 4 of the 2014 season. Henne would only play three more games with the Jaguars before signing with the Chiefs this offseason. 2018 season.
Since moving to Jacksonville’s bench, Henn has played just 14 games in eight seasons — including just one start in the 2020 season with Kansas City.
Henn will be remembered by Kansas City for his heroics during the 2020 AFC Divisional Round playoff game against the Cleveland Browns.
After Patrick Mahomes went down with a concussion in the third quarter, Henne took charge of the team.
He only threw for 66 yards and an interception, but he also had a key third down run that kept the clock ticking and secured a 22-17 win. The Chiefs would go to Super Bowl LV that season, where they would lose to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Henne will be called upon to fill in for Mahomes in the 2022 season after the MVP suffered an ankle injury against the Jaguars.
He once again took control, driving the length of the field and completing a one-yard touchdown pass to Travis Kelce on the final drive of his NFL career.
