‘Wherever he goes I want to go with him’: Josko Guardiol hints at a move to Chelsea as he admits he wants to continue playing with Christopher Nkunku as the defender begins to struggle to come to terms with his failed move to Blues

  • Nkunku is reportedly set to move to Chelsea in the summer in a pre-arranged transfer
  • Guardiol also opened up about his own failed move to the Blues last summer

Josko Gvardiol has admitted he wants to follow Christopher Nkunku “wherever” his RB Leipzig team-mate goes in a huge hint about his future.

Nkunku is reportedly on his way to Chelsea this summer after agreeing to join the Blues when his release clause comes into effect.

“The signs are very, very clear that he is moving to Chelsea,” Leipzig sporting director Max Eberle told BILD of the £53m striker’s proposed move.

And it seems Gvardiol, 21, is also keen on a move after missing out on his own switch to Chelsea last summer.

Speaking to The Times, the Leipzig defender discussed the uncertainty surrounding his failed transfer and what the future holds.

Gvardiol said: “I was really confused because a month before the window started I was upstairs with the sporting director and he said, ‘Yes Josko, we’re not going to sell you, we need you, we believe in you.’

“I was fine, I’m fine with it, I can stay here, I like it here, all I need is to work on myself, play, win something else. That’s how it was until the last two days.’

Gvardiol continued: “My agent called me and said that Chelsea are extremely interested and, of course, you definitely think about a serious offer from a huge club like Chelsea. Leipzig said they didn’t want to sell me.’

So a move fell through and he admits dealing with the disappointment was a challenge.

“In the end I really struggled with that decision, but we didn’t do a deal. It is what it is,” added the Croatia international.

However, rumors surrounding a potential transfer will surely start to re-circulate after Guardiol’s comments about Nkunku heading to Chelsea.

Speaking about the French forward, Gvardiol said: “I’ve never seen a player like Christoph, he’s incredible.”

And in a remark that will have Chelsea fans roaring, the World Cup semi-finalist added: “Every time I talk to someone about him, I always say wherever he goes I want to go with him.”

Chelsea have been on the money under new owner Todd Boehly and spent a staggering £323million in the January transfer window.

With Nkunku arriving, plans already seem to be in motion for the summer and Chelsea fans will be waiting to see if Gvardiol’s move can also be pushed over the line this time around.

Despite the new signings, Graham Potter’s side have struggled for results since the January transfer window and currently sit 10th in the Premier League.

The Blues have a London derby with Tottenham next – in which they will be hoping to kick-start the second half of their campaign.
