“The Buried Giant” Guillermo Del Toro Netflix Movie: What We Know So Far

Fresh off his big hit with PinocchioOscar winner and one of the most acclaimed creators of modern cinema, Guillermo del Toro returns to Netflix with another stop-motion animated film called The Buried Giant, an adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel of the same name. Here’s what we know:

Guillermo del Toro will direct the film as well as co-write it with Dennis Kelly, whose credits include Netflix Matilda the Musical, Utopia, The third day, and more. In fact, we know Kelly is hooked The Buried Giant on Netflix by at least summer 2022. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get an official comment from Netflix at the time.

In announcing the move, Guillermo del Toro commented:

The Buried Giant continuing my animation collaboration with Netflix and our pursuit of stop-motion as a means to tell complex stories and build limitless worlds. It is a great honor and a greater responsibility for me to direct this script that Dennis Kelly and I are adapting from Kazuo Ishiguro’s profound and imaginative novel.”

Guillermo del Toro is working with Netflix as part of an overall deal signed in August 2020. It’s one of at least three projects we understand del Toro currently has in the works with other Dr. Frankenstein and Vampire Tapestry.

Netflix Film president Scott Stuber also made a statement:

“Guillermo del Toro is a visionary director and a master of his craft. We couldn’t be more proud of its prestige recognition Pinocchioand we are delighted to continue our creative partnership as he develops his next project with Netflix.”

The Buried Giant based on the novel of the same name by Kazuo Ishiguro. It was released in March 2015 and Ishiguro reportedly spent ten years “on and off” writing it.

Here is the summary for The Buried Giant:

In post-Arthurian Britain, the wars that once raged between the Saxons and Britons have finally stopped. Axl and Beatrice, an elderly British couple, set out to visit their son, whom they haven’t seen in years. And, because a strange fog has caused mass amnesia across the country, they barely remember anything about him. Joined on their journey by a Saxon warrior, his orphaned soldier, and an illustrious knight, Axl and Beatrice slowly begin to remember the dark and troubled past they all share.


Who is cast in? The Buried Giant?

As of February 2023, no cast members have been announced for Netflix The Buried Giant as the series is still quite early in development.

We should hear more news about this in the coming months. It’s very likely we’ll hear some familiar voices from Guillermo del Toro’s other projects, as he’s one of those directors who often has his favorites to work with. Ron Perlman, Cate Blanchett, Doug Jones, to name a few.


What is the production status? The Buried Giant?

We probably won’t hear many updates on the production front, as this is stop-motion animation and the work is done almost exclusively in animation studios. A son Guillermo del Toro’s PinocchioShadowMachine’s stop motion studio will serve as the production base.


What is the Netflix release date The Buried Giant?

Netflix has not announced any release dates The Buried Giant.

That said, we can look at the timeline for del Toro’s Pinocchio and try to come up with some form of educated guess. Pinocchio had a troubled 10-year development story from 2008 and didn’t appear to be entering active production until Netflix picked it up in 2018, with the film finally set for release in 2022.

Animation projects tend to take a long time to make. Will THe buried the Giant does it also take several years to complete or will the process be faster this time? Only time will tell.
